People often ask for an exact number of hours before mold “starts.” Buildings are not laboratory timers. Temperature, material type, contamination, ventilation, humidity, and how wet the material became all affect what happens next.
The practical rule is more useful: water-damaged materials should be dried as quickly as reasonably possible.
Why some materials are more vulnerable
Drywall paper, insulation, carpet backing, ceiling tiles, wood products, dust, and other organic materials can support growth when moisture remains.
Why hidden moisture matters
The surface can feel dry while insulation, subflooring, wall cavities, or other materials remain damp. That is why a water event should be evaluated by where the water traveled, not only where it was first seen.

What to do after a leak or flood
Stop the water source when safe, remove standing water, begin appropriate drying, and track which materials were affected. Do not assume a wall cavity dried just because the room surface looks better.
